pH and pOH Calculations

ChemistryUpdated October 25, 2026

Mathematical steps for calculating pH, pOH, and ion concentrations.

pH and pOH Calculations

Find Concentration: determine molarity of H+ or OH- ions in solution.

Calculate pH or pOH: evaluate pH = -log[H+] or pOH = -log[OH-].

Convert between pH and pOH: use relationship pH + pOH = 14.

Determine Acidity: pH < 7 is acidic; pH > 7 is basic.

Calculate Molarity from pH or pOH: evaluate [H+] = 10^(-pH) or [OH-] = 10^(-pOH).
